Fifth Gear – Renault Modus v Volvo 940 Crash Test

Where are you better off in a head-on crash? A modern-day 5* Euro NCAP car, or an old banger that’s built like a tank?

    @nanth85
No, the Volvo engine IS there.

Watch this video: /watch?v=k3ygYUYia9I (add the youtube-think to the link)
Pause at 6:51, right before he puts his hand in front of the camera.

There you can clearly see the Volvo B230 redblock engine.

i would like to see that with the engine still in the volvo there where no engine parts any where in this clip.

To be honest the Volvo isn’t so bad for his age.
If the engint’s even more was removed, he has also lost his mass advantage. So don’t blame the Volvo like that and don’t blame the fysics.
BTW: If you see the first renault crash tests on euro ncap ie blaming.
But the modus is a safe car.

you are right that a new Volvo would crush the Renault… BUT… The Volvo in this video has its engine removed. I saw the original uncut version a few years ago and they showed the removal of the engine plus all components…. the engine bay is completely empty in this video in the volvo.

Well that shows how today’s superminies are designed to be as stiff as possible making the other car absorb more than the it was designed to, anyways the Volvo is really really old. Had this been a newer Volvo, the Volvo would have stood up to the Renault trying to punch through it. That’s why old cars aren’t safe.

@nanth85 NO, it’s just that the Volvo is very old and the Renault is a very stiff little car. Had the Volvo been newer then the Volvo would have crushed the Renault.

    GO VOLVO!
I think there’s something spoky with this video… The volvo should just plow the Renault in two pieces, or that’s what I wanted at least…

  13. #13 by innocentconvict on February 20, 2010 - 6:18 pm

hell the volvo looks better even after :O

  14. #14 by nanth85 on February 20, 2010 - 6:45 pm

the engine is removed from the volvo…. LOL… Remove the engine from the modus and the volvo punches through to the trunk.

A very high amount of energy is absorbed by the engine and its mounts so this is not a fair test.

Provide a source to that video, please?

i would like to see the same test with the steering wheel on its original site. This does make a difference indeed. There have been many crash tests profing that.

i think that volvo is doing very well.. this volvo is old.. but modus is new.. so make a conclusion ;)

  18. #18 by Benjimindle on February 20, 2010 - 8:33 pm

that modus is operating on the same saftey principle as 4×4’s, build the frame as strong as possible, forcing the other car to absorb your kinetic energy as well as its own. basically, it is designed to kill the person in the other car, rather than absorb the collision.

the Volvo, on the other hand, uses a long bonnet and crumple zone to protect both drivers.

and the modus is fuck ugly.

Just goes to show how many advances there have been in recent years. Volvos were famously designed to crumple like that ‘crumple zones front and rear’ was one of their key safety messages, as it absorbs the kinetic energy. But obviously many modern cars are safer still.
