Is this supposed to mean that X is “shocked” because of improper conduct happening right under his nose? Or does this mean that X knew about it all along but is only feigning “shock” at this time (when it is convenient to do so)? Recall that at this point in the movie Cpt. Renault is closing Ricky’s bar down for reasons having little to do with gambling.
The movie was partly a political comment of its own at the time. It was an argument for the US to look beyond itself, like Rick, and join the fight against Fascism. (Between the original play and the release of the movie, the US did enter WWII.)
My “Captain Louis Renault Award” goes to employers who are “Shocked! Shocked!” to find undocumented workers in their employ. Of course, they make this “shocking” discovery only when those workers try to organize a union or protest their low wages and long hours.
