The Capstone CMT-380 was the surprise basement find of the LA Auto Show. The Capstone CMT-380 is essentially a prototype show car designed to highlight the technology and products available from Capstone Turbine Corporation. The concept for the high performance hybrid electric microturbine vehicle was developed by Electronic Arts (EA) Chief Creative Director Richard Hilleman.

Capstone Supercar CMT-380

After working on the car for quaternary years, creator Richard Hilleman was the Negro of the hour as he fielded questions most his unusual microturbine-lithium-ion hybrid powertrain fitted to a GTM Supercar outfit body. It may ease be in the test phase, but Capstone claims that the car crapper reach a top speed of 150mph, and is able to running from zero to 60mph in meet 3.9 seconds.

The CMT-380 features an extraordinary organism drivetrain which uses digit of Capstone’s new C30 (30-kilowatt) microturbine engines to modify the range of the primarily electric powered vehicle. The turbine can be run on either diesel or biodiesel.

Capstone Supercar CMT-380

The CMT-380 features lithium-polymer battery cells that crapper be charged at home or at a open recharging station. While driving, the CMT-380 crapper operate on 100 percent battery power in zero emissions mode for a arrange of up to 80 miles. When the batteries reach a predetermined land of discharge, the Capstone C30 microturbine quietly fires up and recharges the batteries on the fly to modify the dynamical arrange up to 500 miles. The diesel oxyacetylene C30 microturbine requires inferior maintenance than traditional oxidization engines and produces ultra-low wear emissions. Hilleman has owned an automobile vehicle – a regenerate Porsche 550 Spyder – for at 15 eld and has constantly upgraded it. The EV utilised to have meet 30 hp with advance acids but now uses metal ferrous batteries and has 200 hp. The 100-mile arrange hasn’t changed, though, and so he knew it was instance to physique a hybrid. He definite on Capstone’s diesel microturbines as the arrange extender.

Capstone Supercar CMT-380

He knew he could rely on them – they’ve been used in buses for years – but there was still the challenge of fitting the organisation into a automobile same this. Hilleman built the CMT-380 just for himself, but Capstone is happy to show it off as a grounds of construct vehicle. It would be too pricey to place into accumulation creation (Hilleman estimated he place in most $375,000 hours of work), but it’s not impracticable that a high-end, expensive, limited creation run could be made some day.

Capstone Supercar CMT-380

Right now, Hilleman is really happy with his creation. He especially loves the sound of the vehicle. Three feet to the side of the car, the microturbine puts out about 87 dB, but in the cabin, it’s nearly silent. California accumulation might order him to add a muffler, but it’s already stilly enough without one. He’s got a solution for that problem, should he need it.

The chassis and bodywork of the Capstone CMT-380 are borrowed from the Factory Five GTM kit sports car, and modified to accept the organism drivetrain.

Capstone Supercar CMT-380

\”Capstone’s CMT-380 is meet today finishing up the conceptual design and prototypal article testing stage,\” said Darren Jamison, Capstone President and CEO. \”We organisation to finalize rattling soon a limited production plan, in part, based on welfare received at the [2009] LA Auto Show. We look customers will be a select assemble of individuals who revalue its some innovative high-performance and high-technology dynamical characteristics, long dynamical range and ultra-low emissions,\” added Jamison.

General Motors feels it has a lineup stuffed with vastly improved products and it wants to intend as many customers behind the wheel of a newborn Chevy, Cadillac, GMC or Buick to prove its point. Anyone can nous over to the topical concern for a effort drive, but the General is reportedly looking for modify more structure to intend you to evaluate a newborn GM product, including effort drives right at your topical auto show.

The city News reports that GM is employed with officials from COBO and the municipality of city to set up a driving route so that consumers can effort the automaker’s products on-site. Vehicles probable be featured include newborn products such as the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX. The effort drive Atlantic at COBO is reportedly part of GM’s totally revamped 85,000 sq ft exhibit space, which includes more interactive displays and plentitude of areas to exhibit off newborn profession like direct injection and the Voltec system. Obviously, the General needed to make some field changes, since it won’t need displays for Pontiac, Saab and Saturn in 2010.

Customer effort drives were piloted at the New England Auto Show early this year, where Cadillac reportedly put over 1,400 grouping behind the wheel. GM is also looking to set up drives at several another field shows, including metropolis in February, but the biggest push will take place in field metropolitan areas on the east and west coasts, where GM creation consideration is weakest.

Auto exhibit effort drives make amend sense, considering that jillions of showgoers listen these events every year. People who pay $12 to look at cars in a crammed and crowded convention center are probable the exact same grouping to intend agog about newborn products. Why not give them seat time and permit the word-of-mouth flow?

DETROIT – A grizzled stager who attended all of the 2010 North American International Auto Show press conferences here Monday and Tuesday says he lost count of automakers’ use of the word \”sustainable.\” That much hasn’t changed — it’s been the word of the exhibit since at least the mid-’00s. The difference, this time, is that while automobile vehicles grabbed much of the headlines, the big news this year is small cars.

Consider the new Ford Focus, perhaps the major star of the show, judging by press day coverage, or the Chevrolet Aveo RS \”concept\” car, the 1.4-liter turbo four-door hatchback headlike for creation late this year. The Aveo’s only concept elements haw be the 19-inch wheels and edifice dual wear pipe, which Chevy hopes the sport compact receiver crowd adds to the suddenly interesting subcompact.

So let’s call that the theme of the 2010 NAIAS. I didn’t attend all the press conferences, because Motor Trend has a full body covering this show, and we separate them up, but I saw pretty much everything:

Best in Show: Unlike previous shows, modify last year’s, there are no big standouts. Rather, the exhibit was filled with good, solid product, most of it quickly headlike for creation or lightly disguised future creation models. That said I’m feat to award the Audi e-tron Detroit concept because the German automaker continues to extend its design leadership to a rather pie-in-the-sky automobile sports car. Updated from the Frankfurt ‘09 e-tron, the crystal-blue Audi combines R8 styling in what looks more same a TT-sized coupe. The two side motors wage 201 horsepower and 1955 lb-ft of torque (that’s not a typo — that’s apparently Audi’s multiplied torque number) to the side wheels only (no quattro). What I same best, though, are the side sail panels flowing into horizontal taillamps that provide the car a mid-century \”Jetsons\”-era look. Sublime.

Being the Detroit-based programme guy, I tend to countenance at production intros as old news, even if we’ve never seen it before. This year’s show was, unfortunately, a taste short on concepts. While Ford and Chevy are featuring small sedans and hatchbacks, I figure the way Americans will embrace \”small\” will be with crossovers and one-box vehicles like this Scion xB competitor. The GMC Granite is fashioned with enough personality to getting first-generation xB enthusiasts who were put off by the convention of the second-generation xB. And it’s fashioned so you can flip the back seat down, flip the face passenger seat off to be nonconvergent with the center housing and carry a elevation bike without removing the face wheel. Cool.

Why We Need More Concepts: They inspire designers. Without them, cars and trucks would countenance likewise safe, likewise much alike. The organisation of a automobile or truck remains the most important surroundings for most customers. And yes, we’ll still need auto shows for decades to come, so that consumers and the press can see the cars and concepts up close and personal.
